Which border worker insurance to choose, CMU or LAMal?

Swiss border workers who are French residents must subscribe to a compulsory health scheme.

They are no longer covered by the general French social security scheme or by their mutual or supplementary insurance in France from their first day of work in Switzerland.

This obligation to insure concerns all border workers, regardless of their place of work in Switzerland and their place of residence in France.
A French border worker may opt for one of the two compulsory schemes :

CMU (french regime)

LAMal (Swiss regime)

It is preferable to take the steps to insure BEFORE the first day of work in Switzerland.

You can exercise your right of option between the Swiss health insurance and the French health insurance within 3 months from the date of your employment in Switzerland or your domicile in France for Swiss residents coming to live in France from their first day of work in Switzerland.

After this period, you will be automatically affiliated with the Swiss health insurance company LAMal.

Warning : the option has an irrevocable status and is only exercised in the following cases :

➢ First job in Switzerland

➢ You resume work in Switzerland after a period of unemployment

➢ You change your status (e.g.: change from employee to pensioner status)

➢ You change your country of residence (installation in France)

Management of your care by the border worker CMU :

Depending on whether your care is carried out in France or Switzerland, their treatment methods are different.

Your health insurance coverage entitles you and your beneficiaries to the following coverage of care:

➢ Doctors care and prescribed medications

➢ Hospital treatment costs

➢ Maternity costs, other care, under certain conditions (vaccines, home care, others.)

Refunds are made under the same conditions and repayment rate as the conventional CMU.

It is important to subscribe to a Supplemental health in order to cover the part of the costs remaining to be borne by you.

In the case of accidents at work, loss of earnings (sickness, maternity), occupational diseases or disability, this is a matter for the Swiss social security scheme.
They are therefore not covered by the insurance French disease.

2. LAMal

The Swiss LAMal regime offers insurance coverage to border workers, allowing them to benefit from care in Switzerland and France.

All the rights holders of the border worker must be insured in the same health insurance fund as him (unless they are obligatorily insured in France. e.g. a spouse who works in France and is automatically insured general French health insurance).

To receive care in France, border workers must complete the E106 form and hand it over the primary health insurance fund center on which they depend.

LAMal supports your care :

➢ Doctors care and prescribed medications

➢ Common Division Hospital Treatment Fee

➢ Maternity costs, under certain conditions (vaccines, home care, others.)

Note : Dental care is not included, except for some special cases, and optical care is very little reimbursed.
